Otis, Eric, Aimee, Jackson, Viv and the others have been reassigned to a new high school for their senior year, Baccalaureate. Those who have fought against Moordale’s conservatism are surprised to discover a safe and very open-minded environment at Cavendish High School. Make way for yoga courses, positive thinking and eco-friendly initiatives! The series gently pokes fun at Nordic high schools, often acclaimed for their cutting-edge classroom environment. In Cavendish, Otis discovers himself competition : a student, O (Thaddea Graham), works as a sexologist. Convinced that she stole his idea, he embarks on a crusade, which gives rise to many comical situations. Far from high school, Adam seeks his professional path in the countryside, while Maeve begins her literary writing course at a prestigious American university, with a professor and writer with a fragile ego (Dan Levy).

In Moordale, Jean (the wonderful Gillian Anderson) is raising her baby alone and trying to get back to work, while dealing with postpartum depression. A mixed season 4

Faithful to its DNA, Sex education offers his perspective on topics such as non-binaryness (Cal continues his journey), grief, asexuality, lack of accessibility for people with disabilities, school bullying (the story of Ruby and O) or the complex relationship Between strangeness and the religion experienced by Eric.

To compensate for the departures, new LGBTQIA+ protagonists appear, in particular a very popular group, made up of Abby and Roman, two trans teenagers and Aisha, queer and hard of hearing. The socket: we have little time to get to know them. The plots multiply, but the heart isn’t completely there. Some situations have the smell of repeatas the friendship once again in danger between Eric and Otis. Much of the season is still dedicated to they will/won’t they between Otis and Maeve, but it lasted so long we almost didn’t care to see them together! And Maeve once again piles up too many problems for one person. Laurie Nunn struggles with too many characters to handle, and some are underdeveloped or reduced to their specificity. The series becomes too didactic and seems to tick boxes, where before everything was more fluid.

An already cult series

This fourth season still has some great moments in store and the finale brings a satisfying conclusion for the historical characters (Otis, Maeve, Eric, Adam, Aimee, Jackson). Despite the negatives, we are over the moon to find it launch fantastic, which has exploded in recent years in Hollywood. To name a few, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells were in attendance Barbie this summer.

Sex education it has always been a series sensitive to developments in our society. Festive, the first two seasons celebrated the liberation of women’s bodies and speech, in the wake of the Me Too movement. With its conservative director and its retrograde measures, the third season reflects the reaction against fourth wave feminism. Less funny and biting than the previous ones, this final season is nostalgic for a bygone era.

Despite everything, the characters struggle to find their way. Dbe yourself, uncompromisingly and unapologeticallythat’s the big theme of Sex education, which will have marked the history of teenage dramaspeaking like no one else about sexuality in all its forms diversity, with kindness and humor.
