An important challenge. Today, women they are at the origin of only 4% of the number of works included in the catalog of French museum collections. They are underrepresented at the top of cultural institutions, and are still condemned to oblivion in the scientific world, where many researchers, victims of the Matilda effect, are deprived of the credit they deserve.
Thus, in 2015, the Interregional Federation for Gender Equality in Arts and Culture created the Heritage Days that make visible and revalue “the cultural heritage of women, which the term heritage tends to make invisible “.
A short tour of France with cultural events and outings scheduled this weekend to honor this formidable heritage, still too confidential for our tastes.
What to do on the occasion of the Heritage Days, which are held from 15 to 17 September?
Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of activities offered throughout France:
- If you live in Ile-de-France, 21 free events are organised: screenings, theatrical performances, conferences, debates, archive open days dedicated to female artists, public readings, concerts and DJ sets, exhibitions… The full program is you can find it on this link.
- In Normandy, come and participate in conferences, exhibitions, readings, dance performances, guided tours, screenings, workshops… The complete program of the region can be found at this link.
- In Rennes, meet on Saturdays and Sundays for breathtaking architectural walks or for a dive into the local heritage. The program right here.
- There will also be Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, from 8 to 23 September 2023, for three weeks dedicated to Matrimoine! With more than thirty events to discover in the region, listed at this address.
- The Hauts-de-France will propose 15 meetings in 15 departments, placing emphasis, among other things, on the place of women in sport yesterday and today. The complete program can be found on their Facebook page.
- Bordeaux has opted, from 2021, for a change of nomenclature and therefore officially celebrates Heritage and Wedding Days. The city offers a common program, where events celebrating heritage are marked by a dedicated pictogram. This year, the Public Garden will highlight, for example, “Five destinies of women”, while the Bordeaux Museum will offer guided tours on the theme “Nature seen through the exploration of women”. The city also offers a series of activities aimed at young people to discover the heritage of Aquitaine.
