Ryan Reynolds’ Free boy the film was a great success and very fun to watch. Given the success of the film, Disney obviously wants a sequel. Well, that sequel is in development, but the director Shawn Levy says the film will have to be reworked due to the Barbie movie.
Free boy AND Barbie they capture similar themes and because of this Levy wants to make sure the sequel is different from other films. During an interview with Collider, Levy said:
“We love Free Guy and the Free Guy love that has resonated in the aftershocks, if you will, of the last couple of years. He was exciting for Ryan [Reynolds] and I. We’re developing a sequel, but the truth is, now you have Barbie who has obviously made her mark on a character in a fictional world coming to self-awareness. So, we will only make Free Guy 2 if it is different from the first film and if it is different from the other films.”
There’s definitely a clever way to continue Free Guy’s story if they really want to. I’m sure they’ll figure something out. However, the film doesn’t necessarily need a sequel. Even Reynolds once said that he didn’t really want to make a sequel. He said:
“There’s potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would like. But also: does everything fucking have to be a sequel? I do not know. Sometimes it’s okay to just make a movie, have it kick ass, and then we all go home.
“So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to immediately say, ‘Ohh, making a sequel will validate the first one,’ No, the first movie will validate the first one and then you can walk away. It’s just that. like that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”
Obviously he’s interested in making a sequel now, but right now they’re just trying to come up with the right story. If they move forward, I hope the story that comes out of it is unique.
