A feminicide every two and a half days. This is the report by the Interior Ministry, which on Saturday 2 September made public its national study on violent deaths within the couple.
With a total of 118 registered feminicides, the ministry’s study records only a slight decrease compared to 2021, when 122 women were killed by their spouse or ex-spouse.
One in three victims had already suffered violence and 16% had filed a complaint
On the part of the authors, the typology remains the same, underlines the ministry: “ The typical author profile has not changed. They are mainly men (84%), more often in couples, of French nationality, aged between 30 and 49 and who do not exercise or no longer exercise a professional activity..
Women make up 81% of the victims. In the vast majority of cases, these are women of French nationality, aged between 30 and 49, who are unemployed.
Of the 118 victims of femicide, 37 women (nearly a third) had suffered previous violence by their executioner. Twenty-four of them had reported him to the authorities, of which 19 filed a complaint (representing 16% of the women killed in total).
Like our colleagues from the World“ three of the victims wore protective clothing. One of the victims had a “high danger telephone” which allowed rapid intervention by the police thanks to a pre-programmed key and, for two others, the spouse or ex-spouse was under surveillance. “.
Attempted murders within the couple on the rise
The report also notes a resurgence (45%) of attempted murders within couples, with 366 acts (of which 267 female victims) recorded in 2022, against 251 in 2021.
The main reasons that lead to action are the dispute (in 26% of cases) and the refusal of separation (23%). Geographically, it is the Northern department that records the highest number of feminicides, followed by the Alpes-Maritimes and the Rhône (legacy) and then by the Seine-Saint-Denis.
The ministry’s study also specifies that twelve underage children were victims of infanticide in 2022, an identical figure to 2021.
Publishing this report at the end of the summer is not trivial: every year, the months of July and August represent a particularly vulnerable period for women victims of violence. Last year, the collective Femicide by partner or ex » identified 18 feminicides in France among 1um July and 15 August 2022.
On Thursday 31 August in La Croix-de-la-Rochette (73), a 42-year-old woman was killed with a machete while leaving her baby at the nursery.
