“I can’t make the film if I don’t sleep with you”: on Mediapart, 5 actresses accuse Philippe Garrel

A Mediapart investigation, published on Wednesday 30 August, reports the testimonies of five women, including actresses Anna Mouglalis and Marie Vialle, who accuse the 75-year-old director of having made sexual advances to them during professional encounters. Four of them report attempts at non-consensual kissing.

For a long time they remained silent, convinced they were not believed or paralyzed by the fear of jeopardizing their fledgling career.

In a survey by MediapartReleased on Wednesday 30 August, five actresses decide to break their silence about award-winning director Philippe Garrel, who was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival this year.

Among the witnesses, who have not yet pressed charges, four describe ” non-consensual gestures and kisses, qualifying as sexual assault or attempted sexual assault ”, in the columns of Mediapart.

In every story, the pattern repeats itself. The director proposes a role for the 20-year-old aspiring actress. He proposes a pseudo-professional meeting and takes the opportunity to make persistent advances.

For Joan (ed: the name has been changed), it is a caress on the thigh and an attempted stolen kiss that will leave the young 27-year-old deeply marked. Today she never goes to castings alone anymore.

Some, like Laurence Cordier or Clotilde Hesme, met Philippe Garrel at the Conservatoire where he was their teacher. Others, like Anna Mouglalis or Jeanne, had shot with the director for the first time and had positive memories. Their common point? Everyone came to the appointment with confidence.

All, almost unanimously, say to each other ” disgusted »: “He took my time without giving me the rules of the game, which is that he wouldn’t make a film without sleeping with me” explains, for example, the actress Marie Vialle to whom the director allegedly said “your film needs to know you”. ” Really “ assuring that he could not “to do otherwise” than sleep with her in the name of cinema.

Philippe Garrel denies most of the facts

Asked by Mediapartthe director explains that “ misunderstood ” from the ” sense » and guarantees a « interrogation reading these many testimonials.

On 24 August he also made contact with Anna Mouglalis. Was she trying to beg her forgiveness or figure out her side of her story? Indeed, she simply invited her to withdraw her testimony about her, in the name of ” their friendship “. A pressure to which the actress did not want to give in.

If the director says he is ready to apologize to the actresses he could have hurt, the road to redemption remains visibly long.
