Every year, a Monday really happens to be a long-awaited day – on this May day the Met Gala Costume Institute Ball takes place like clockwork at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And as the years went by, we began to look forward to only one guest attending the event. His name is Blake Lively.
Every year, the outfits of the actress became more interesting, more complex and even more mysterious. The undisputed climax of this story was the Gossip Girl star’s appearance at the 2022 prom; her dress was literally full of hidden meanings and references that needed to be deciphered. And although this year’s event unfortunately passed without the participation of Blake, who was celebrating the first Monday of May on the couch with his fourth newborn daughter, we continue to entertain ourselves with his archive printouts. Or rather, a cult.
That’s why today, August 25, in honor of Blake Lively’s birthday, we decided to visually recall the legendary images of the actress at the Met Gala, which every year rightfully falls into the category of the best prom dresses. After all, his ability to choose clothes really knows no bounds. Take, for example, the indisputable fact that since 2016, when the color of the red carpet was no longer limited to red, Blake began to rely on images that fit the palette of the canvas. Not without reason, a cryptic comment from Gigi Hadid appeared under one of the actress’s posts in 2020: “How far in advance do you inform Anna Wintour (American Vogue’s editor-in-chief and prom promoter – Approx.)? .ed.) about what color the carpet should be?”.

Perhaps the most memorable trip was Blake, who to this day continues to make the headlines of world publications. Embellished with many precious stones and crystals, the copper sheath dress was designed by Donatella Versace herself and is a true homage to New York architecture. The story didn’t end there: as the actress reached the middle of the red carpet, the assistants quickly untied the dress’s bow, and the tail of the dress instantly turned turquoise. Moreover, the transformation of the image was a surprise even to Blake’s husband, Ryan Reynolds – I remember a video of him instantly circulating the Web, showing his sincerely enthusiastic reaction to the unexpected turn.

And yes, we have 100% reference to the Statue of Liberty. Originally the monument was copper, but later changed to turquoise due to oxidation of the metal. Meanwhile, Blake’s tiara decorated with diamonds and tourmalines also refers to the main symbol of New York. And finally, cherries. At first, fashion experts perceived the glittering pattern on the actress’s skirt as flowers, but whatever. It turned out that the 12 signs of the zodiac were depicted on the dress, drawn and embroidered by hand. In other words, a literal tribute to the ceiling of Grand Central Station in Manhattan.

Blake called the outfit she wore to her 2018 prom “Undoubtedly, the most loved photo of all time,” and stressed that she now regularly shows kids her photos. The actress hit the target exactly with her image selection; It took just 600 hours of work to embroider the bodice of the Atelier Versace gown. We include the laws of mathematics – 25 days.
The tail of the suit, in gold and burgundy tones, was so long that it covered almost the entire staircase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Blake decided to complete her outfit with a halo-like tiara by Lorraine Schwartz, the actress’s beloved designer. Goddess, nothing more.

One of the most striking examples of pairing Blake’s outfits with a carpet palette. For the 2017 Met Gala, the actress made a winning bet on a gold-coloured Atelier Versace gown with a deep V-neck and multiple metal chains. The final chord was a magnificent string of blue and blue feathers. Here’s the “good old” look at open sexuality that prevails today.

Blake’s decision for the 2016 prom was a pink Burberry maxi dress with a floral cape. It is impossible not to say that the actress was even involved in the process of creating clothes. “We loved the idea of combining complex craft techniques with high-tech fabrics,” said Christopher Bailey, Creative Director of the Maison. “The result is truly one-of-a-kind. A gem just like Blake!” Of course, we can’t agree.

In 2014, the guests of the prom indiscriminately voted for the Old Hollywood style – after all, the event was dedicated to the first American fashion designer, Charles James. And Blake decided to keep up with her colleagues: she appeared on the red carpet at the time in a pale pink bodycon dress with crystal embroidery from Gucci. A long, flowing cloak with a train deserves separate laurels—and yet how organically the actress looks in an Old Hollywood aesthetic. And of course with a deep V-neck.
