While Nike initially refused to market England goalkeeper Mary Earps’ jersey, its exploits in the soccer World Cup final could very well bend the mark. One small step for fashion, one giant leap for women’s football?

If you haven’t followed the Women’s World Cup, you might have missed the excitement of British goalkeeper Mary Earps. In the final of the competition in which Spain beat England, she saved a penalty from striker Jennifer Hermoso in particularly impressive fashion. British sports journalist Charlie Haffenden added a layer:

“Mary Earps just saved a penalty in a World Cup final and you STILL can’t buy her goalkeeper jersey. You can’t get any more glorious than that as a goalkeeper and it will inspire so many people. Fix it, Nike. »

Even David Beckham wanted to pay homage to the prowess of Mary Earps, through ephemeral stories on Instagram, likely to influence Nike. According to Daily mailthe former soccer star would consider the choice of sports equipment supplier unfair and would support the petition.

As the petition for Nike to sell Mary Earps shirts approaches 75,000 signatures, the brand has finally fought back.

“We have seen and shared the unprecedented passion and interest in this year’s tournament and want to play our part in providing the best products and services to athletes and fans. We have invested more in this world championship than in any other world tournament to date. AND we recognize that we have not served fans who wish to show their passion and support for team goalkeepers and will continue to work with FIFA and national associations to meet growing demand. »
