When it comes to hair hygiene, the balance between too much and not enough is pretty hard to find. Since we now know that washing your hair every day can lead to scalp imbalance and overproduction of sebum, we’re tempted to space out our washings to achieve a once-a-week rhythm. In fact, this method is no longer recommended. But why ? Rosi Fernández, director of Ananda Ferdi, a hairdresser in Madrid, explains it to the magazine vogue :
“it is not advisable to go more than a week without washing your hair, because the follicle becomes clogged and is not oxygenated”
Yet hair still looks clean as it has been trained to produce less sebum. So, what is the problem ? According to the expert, their appearance can be misleading : “You may have the impression that hair is clean, but with pollution, sweat, tobacco smoke… hair gets saturated”
The risks of not washing often enough
When you wash your hair, you also remove excess sebum, pollution particles and dead skin cells that may have built up on your scalp and lengths. But what if you don’t do it often enough?
Well it’s very simple: the follicle becomes clogged and the scalp (which is skin in its own right) can no longer oxygenate properly, which leads to an imbalance. Since the sebum no longer flows properly, the area becomes dehydrated, which leads to the appearance of itching, dandruff and even dryness. Phenomena that can weaken the hair and make it less vigorous in the face of daily aggressions…

The right washing rhythm: 2 times a week
If you live in a low-polluted area, once a week is more than enough to keep your hair healthy. But if you are in the city, travel by motorbike, on the subway or tend to apply a lot of products to your hair… prevention is better than cure and establish a washing rhythm equivalent to twice a week.
The latter will allow you to remove the residues of pollution, dust, sebum and dead cells that may have accumulated on your scalp and lengths. Also remember to rinse the shampoo well with warm water (to cool) to allow the scales to close and maintain hydration. You know everything !
