This is three times the increase in the male prison population, which stands at 22%.

The global female prison population has increased by more than 100,000 during the decade of 2010. And the incarceration of women would very often be closely linked to domestic violence, poverty and discriminatory laws.
Thus an open letter published on July 17 denounces this invisibility. He brings together more than 250 signatories around the world, including Amnesty International AND Human Rights Watchand is led by Women beyond the wallsan association that works for a better treatment of women in prison.

In this open letter, the signatories call for the incarceration of women to be considered as a key feminist issue. ” Women with lived experience of the criminal justice system were invisible throughout the forum (…) People need to understand that previously incarcerated women need to be included. These people shouldn’t be judged based on their past. »
The signatories call on UN member states, intergovernmental bodies and organizers of future high-level assemblies to address the situation of women in prison, and to ensure that the issue becomes ” priority “.
And not surprisingly, a study conducted by Women Beyond Walls revealed that over 60% of the associations that help women prisoners are in financial difficulty. A quarter say they may not be able to continue operating due to lack of funds, while 70% say they do not receive Nobody financing women’s rights or feminist associations.
