When you ask people around you for the name of their favorite directors, it is not uncommon to hear that of Xavier Dolan. However, the Quebec director seems to have it a far less gratifying picture of his career. This is nothing new: in an interview with First last January, Xavier Dolan confided his tiredness for the cinema :
” I don’t want to do it, write it, produce it, promote it. Taking a project at a safe distance for two years (…) calculate what I’ll wear at a premiere, what I’ll say in an interview, how I’ll dress for a cover… I don’t know. I don’t want it anymore. I do not care anymore.”
“Failures” that do not pass
Despite the months that have passed and the release of his magnificent series The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up, things didn’t go well.
At the launch of his series in Spain, the 34-year-old director confided in the Hispanic press, announcing point blank that he would he retired from filmmaking. “I no longer have the desire or the strength to invest two years in a project so that hardly anyone sees it. I put too much passion into it to suffer these disappointments. I wonder if my cinema is bad when I know it isn’t. »
In addition to his disappointment with the audience that he considers too low, Xavier Dolan also confided great anxiety for a world he feels is falling apart. In an interview with the worldthe director explained:
“I don’t understand the point of trying to tell stories as the world collapses around us. art is useless, and dedicating yourself to cinema is a waste of time. I think about what my work is about and I see myself writing, shooting, editing, in post-production… Then I travel the world to tell what I shot, edited and post-produced… We act as if we have time , but if there’s one thing we don’t have, it’s time. »
Xavier Dolan even concluded by announcing: ” I will build a house where I will take refuge with my friends and watch the world burn“.
