Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, what is it about?
1969… Esteemed archeology professor Indiana Jones is about to take a well-deserved retirement, in his modest apartment where he now lives alone. But his retirement plans are thwarted by the unexpected arrival of his goddaughter Helena Shaw. Always on the lookout for the juiciest deals, this exceptional con man is on the lookout for a rare artifact extremely valuable, which his father had given to Indy years earlier. Regard Archimedean quadranta device that would the power to spot cracks over time.
After he stole the precious object from his godfather, the intrepid young woman leaves the country for Morocco, where she tries to sell it to the highest bidder. Indy is then forced to pursue him… just like ex-Nazi Jürgen Voller, former enemy of Indiana Jones who covets the dial for change the course of world history.

The ingredients of Indiana Jones are here…
If you were afraid of being too out of place with this last work, don’t worry: as a good student succeeding the master Spielberg, James Mangold disseminates in his film all the ingredients who created the legend Indiana Jones. From the iconic music of John Williams, to the clever mix between mind-boggling stunts, worrying risk-taking and keen sense of humor and levitywe find the dough of the saga.
When he first appears on the screen in contemporary times, Indiana Jones is as captivating as ever. like an old gentleman with crooked knees.
He only asks for one thing, and that is to be left alone. If his body has aged, his heart has not withered: Indy never hesitates to throw himself into adventure and danger when duty or his passion for history call him.
As an excellent twenty-minute first sequence showing a Harrison Ford rejuvenated thanks to digital toolsthe film will assume the prejudice that Indy is not a grandfather like the others: suddenly in great shapewill multiply the amazing waterfalls, which, not being realistic, makes the film slide into the field of entertainment that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The film compensates for resting all the action and humor on the shoulders of one elderly man by putting another character center stage, who is both thealter ego and the opposite of Indiana Jones. The transmission to his goddaughter works. Helena inherited audacity, intelligence, mischief and a sense of response of his godfather, while remaining very different from him – differences that will be the source of their joy leggings.
The film stages the confrontation of two points of view on the world: Indiana Jones is always motivated by love for archaeologywhen Helena doesn’t blush because the last of her choices is motivated by the lure of profit. Not surprisingly, we can count on the talent of Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the originality of this cheeky character, who does not burden himself too much with moral considerations to prefer the taste for risk and large sums.
…Less magic and mythology
Excellent actors, an intelligent cast, the legacy of a cult universe… first, The Quadrant of Destiny it had everything to be a great conclusion.
Unfortunately the director James Mangold misses this mark. The film could be multiple nods to cult moments from the saga – a scene where Indiana’s enemies brandish guns against his whip, Sallah’s cameo, or little Teddy’s character, which is clearly an homage to the lovable Half Moon in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom… it’s not enough to resurrect the soul of Indiana Jones.

Because, beyond its gimmicks, if Indiana Jones is an excellent saga, it is precisely thanks to his ability to create magic, mystery, myth. Every Indiana Jones adventure is a foray into an incredibly creative and exciting new universewhich skillfully composes between real historical elements (the Nazis, the war…) e pure imaginary creations (like that awful cult that eaten hearts and traumatized us all our lives.)
This is what is missing The Quadrant of Destiny : the film consists of a constant rush towards an object that we never take the time to let us experience what it has so magical, so charming.
Of a period of 2h35, the film seems so much longer not to use this time to build an exciting adventure around the artifact. Instead, multiply the scenes by pursuits so numerous as to become redundant and often illegible. Indiana Jones and his band sue or are sued: it doesn’t matter why or by whom, the important thing is to produce the most explosive scenes possible. As such, the charming Mads Mikkelsen is missing from the film, who finds little space in this cacophony and has no room to be a truly memorable villain.
The same goes for Teddy, Half Moon’s symbolic heir, whose purpose we don’t quite understand in the film, unlike his flashy predecessor.

Very quickly in front of the film, we get it Disney wanted to introduce Indiana Jones in the mold of the contemporary action film, as well as released every day on platforms such as Netflixforgetting it this font is totally unique and far from interchangeable.
However, this flaw is more than regrettable in the film Testament of a archaeologist heroMeaning what a character capable of discovering hidden treasures in a territory that no one explores, or the magic of an object that everyone would consider an ornament. Beyond the action and special effects, it’s fine the curiosity, intelligence, courage and passion of Indiana Jones who has transported us to these extraordinary universes every time. If you forget this ingredient, the others become of little use…
So despite all his good intentions, his desire to do well, The Quadrant of Destiny it’s watchable, but very forgettable… gold, Indiana Jones is unforgettable : he deserved better.
