Hideo Kojimathe creator of epic games like Metal Gear Solid AND Stranding of death, is a big fan of movies. He’s always sharing his thoughts on the movies he watches on social media, but never expect to see him make one himself.
Kojima doesn’t want to make movies because he’s too perfectionist and if he ever starts one, he’ll never finish it. There is a documentary about Hideo Kojima that recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and that film touches on Kojima’s love of movies.
Kojima participated in a Q&A panel after the screening hosted by Geoff Keighley, and when asked about his love of movies, he said, “To me, movies are special. And it’s so special, I can’t do it.
He went on to say that he’s “a perfectionist” and the way he works with video games wouldn’t really work for making movies. He explained: “In games, no matter how perfect I make it, it doesn’t finish. The movies are two hours long and I have to mix everything up, so I think I’ll never finish shooting it if I start making a movie. I’ll do it all day.
Kojima is currently helping develop the live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding, and while he’s “deeply involved,” he’s not directing the film. Lui said he was “involved in the production, supervision, storyline, look, design and content of the DS film adaptation, but not responsible for directing.”
Kojima has received “many offers” to direct films. But, as you can imagine, now that he’s running a video game studio, Kojima doesn’t want to leave. He explained, “If I were to film and direct a movie, I’d have to be out of the studio for about a year, and I can’t do that.”
