When it comes to sunscreen, we’re pretty well prepared. But there are still little things that can escape us, according to dermatologist Doctor Sam Bunting, interviewed by vogue. According to her, most of us would forget two main steps to ensure optimal UV protection., responsible for skin aging, pigment spots or, in the long term, skin cancer. But what are they?
Apply sufficient sunscreen
Sunscreen, like any beauty product, it must be applied in sufficient quantity to be effective. But how do you measure an SPF? According to the expert, there are several ways to do this: the first is to use a measuring cup, the second is to arm yourself with your fingers to know the right amount and the third is to put dots of cream on your face. She explains:
“You need a quarter teaspoon (or 1.25ml) of sunscreen for your face and the same for your neck. You can also use the two finger rule – index and middle – for convenience. I recommend using the 13-point technique to make sure you cover the skin evenly, without losing any of it. Like painting a wall, you want (and need) an even coat. This technique couldn’t be simpler: Just place 13 fingerprints of SPF on your face, then rub it in. »

Don’t forget the less exposed areas
The ears, the neck, the feet, the inside and outside of the hands or even the hairline… All of these areas also receive the sun and therefore need to be adequately protected. The problem is that we often tend to forget about them or are downright lazy about spreading sunscreen so far. Yet even these places can get burned and be subject to premature aging. To make sure you don’t forget them, it’s best to apply sunscreen in zones, so that you cover the whole body and face step by step. Yes, being methodical always pays off.
Apply the color protection at the right time
Last but not least expert advice: knowing how to use the right products at the right time. Tinted sunscreen, for example, will be much more useful in summer than in winter because it will be easier to reapply throughout the day.as the dermatologist explains: “I recommend using a tinted sunscreen in the summer, which acts as a base and makes it easy to reapply throughout the day, since you won’t have to apply a layer of foundation. »
You are informed! And don’t forget, exposure between 12pm and 4pm should be limited because this is when the sun is at its zenith and when the UV rays are the most penetrating.
