When you are a young parent, you may tend to take charge of your entire home, even for short holidays, to be sure that the heir does not miss anything.
With the famous phrase “just in case”, we fill the trunk of the car at breakneck speed, and sometimes we realize that what we have on board hasn’t helped much.
Another significant point: we really don’t know which objects can make our life easier and allow us to relax a bit. Because frankly, a child who freaks out because it’s not completely dark in the Airbnb room unlike their room at home and therefore doesn’t fall asleep until 11pm – or wakes up at 5am as soon as it’s light – can quickly wear teeth.
We’ve prepared a short, obviously non-exhaustive list that you can add in the comments, so we can all share our tips for on-the-go parenting. This list doesn’t include all the things you usually take, like clothes, diapers, and extra breast pumps if you need them.
On holiday with a baby, you need something to put them to sleep
Yes, legend says that sometimes a child sleeps. When the planets are aligned, the sleep rituals are done, he’s eaten and drunk enough, and most importantly, you’re in the week where he doesn’t bite or catch a cold, well yes, he can sleep (and so can you). But to help that, there are two or three tricks that can work in addition.
Yes, it is necessary to try, as far as possible, and according to his age, to maintain the falling asleep rituals he has at home, so that he maintains his orientation as much as possible. Reading stories, singing songs, stroking the head counterclockwise, all in the moonlight, facing the sea, to each his own eh, but you have to try to keep the same pace.
Not parents or older people telling you ” okay, he’s a child, he can adapt, you just have to let him enjoy the evening they are not there to stay up all night because little Jean-Pascal will have lost his sleep train and will have a crappy night. So frankly, since sleep isn’t something you can mess with when you’re a young parent, get ready with everything you can. And otherwise, to make him sleep well at night, there are several objects, starting with a good adapted bed:
The umbrella bed
Yes, for the uninitiated, a travel cot is not a bed that protects from showers. It is a bed for babies and/or small children, which folds and unfolds more or less easily, which is more or less light, to be able to take it everywhere and to guarantee the heir a safe bed. You can find all kinds of models on the market, but I personally have two favorites: the Easy Sleep from the Béaba brand and the Light travel cot from the BabyBjörn brand. Honestly, the two are alike, both aesthetically and practically.
THE Beaba easy sleep it is slightly heavier and takes up a little more space when folded, but it is very comfortable and can be opened laterally, to allow the child to get out of bed as he wishes. The light of BabyBjörn it has a very Scandinavian design, it is a little lighter, but just as comfortable for children. Its ventilated Mesh fabric allows air to pass through, which is practical during the high summer heat. Both fold and unfold in the blink of an eye, without getting your fingers caught in them, which is a significant point anyway. Easily stored in the trunk of the car or on the train, they can be taken anywhere, and it is very practical to have them at hand.

What to hide the room light before bedtime
When you don’t really know what the level of sunshine will be in a room beforehand, such as when booking a hotel room, lodge or homestay, you can quickly become disillusioned upon realizing that at 10pm the blinds are down no blackout or that the shutters do not close. There is, to try to scrape together a few more hours of sleep, the famous technique of “I stuck a beach towel in the window to camouflage the light”.
Sometimes that’s enough, sometimes not at all. If you want to avoid this disappointment, I found (and tested) Tommee Tippee’s portable blackout curtain, and dammit, that’s great. The concept is very simple: a large black sheet that is attached to the window, and which prevents light from entering. When unfolded, it’s huge, but can fit into small windows thanks to Velcro, and when folded, it fits into a pocket and is no bigger than the last volume ofHarry Potter. She slips into the suitcase between diapers and sleeping bags and, frankly, saves my life (or the night, which is already not bad).

A baby monitor, so you don’t have to worry (too much)
When you sleep in a house you don’t know, the heir’s room is upstairs and you want to be able to sip your GinTo pépouze on the terrace on the ground floor without listening for 10 seconds to make sure he doesn’t cry, the baby the monitor is there . With or without a camera, just by sound, you can tell if your baby is crying, coughing or farting, all without having to tiptoe up the stairs.
I have selected for you two models, the one I use personally, from the brand Philips Advent and that it is very simple, without a camera, and that it does the job perfectly. The second is more expensive, also from the Philips Avent brand, but has a camera, which might reassure some parents.

A small toiletry bag
Who says being human in addition, says additional products. If you don’t feel like lugging around your large 5L containers of liniment, cleansing gel and moisturizer, Mustela has released a small travel case which contains all of this, in a reasonable format. Convenient for long weekends or short holidays, it fits easily into a suitcase and does not take up space.
Don’t forget to slip in toothbrush in the case, because the latter can be brushed as long as they exist. MOM just released two new ones, perfect for the little ones, which adapt well according to age.

A care kit
In addition to the beauty case, it is also necessary to have a first aid kit, to be prepared for any injuries. We had already shared with you the ideal emergency kit according to the emergency pediatrician To be or not to be Toubib, and here are the main points:
- Paracetamol as Doliprane, in suppository, syrup or tablets depending on the age of the child
- Oral rehydration solutions
- Glycerin suppositories or Forlax packets for constipation
- Thiorphan for diarrhea
- An antiseptic to disinfect
- desloratadine for allergies
- Something to treat small sores, such as poultices, bandages, disinfectant, adhesive tape, steristrips, strips, and saline
- Sunscreen and Biafine
- A thermometer
- Tweezers (for splinters, ticks, and other things to remove from the skin)
Don’t worry, it seems like a lot, but it’s all in a small kit that slips into a bag, next to the heir’s health card.
Of course, we don’t put bring-on clothes, diapers, pacifiers, changing bags, and other comforters here. But promised, with a little organization, we can leave (almost) unloaded. Don’t forget to bring the baby too, otherwise there’s no point in taking everything else with you. He’s calm: the older the child, the less stuff there is to bring!
