In Tennessee, a woman who was refused an abortion after a risky pregnancy became infertile

In this American state where abortion is strictly prohibited, Mayron Hollis she had to have an emergency hysterectomy because she was at risk of dying after a rejected abortion.

Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade last June, the stories of women being denied abortions despite a health risk are on the rise. The last example, that of Mayron Hollis, Tennessee, who was denied an abortion for her life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. She had to have an emergency hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus, and as a result she became infertile, she revealed ABC.

Because last summer, shortly after the birth of her first child, Mayron Hollis and her husband find out she’s pregnant. According to the doctors, this new pregnancy was at risk. In fact, she was ectopic, her embryo having implanted itself in the C-section scar from her previous pregnancy.

An abortion refused despite a mortal risk

Complications that can lead to severe fatal postpartum bleeding, as well as the risk of infertility. The couple then decides to resort to voluntary termination of pregnancy. But this abortion was refused to them, Tennessee at the time of the events was part of the States having abrogated this right, without exception. Too few doctors were therefore willing to provide the care the patient needed, fearing arrest.

Unable to afford an abortion in another state, complications multiplied as the pregnancy progressed, until Mayron Hollis’ bladder burst, causing heavy bleeding. In the end, she had to have an emergency hysterectomythe only way according to the doctors to contain the bleeding.

She also had an emergency delivery, by cesarean section, of a girl born prematurely. Since her birth, this child was hospitalized for two monthsand undergoes heavy medical treatment.

From the experience of Mayron Hollis, Tennessee lawmakers have added an exception to abortion laws of the state that would allow abortions for women undergoing ectopic pregnancies, similar to those of Hollis. On the part of women, the response is ongoing. Last March, five women, two of whom were pregnant, filed suit against the state of Texas for obstructing their abortions.
