Since June 2022, the deputy and former minister of Solidarity has been the subject of a third complaint, this time for “attempted rape”.

Said the deputy and former minister “favorable” to the revocation of parliamentary immunity, in the context of an ongoing investigation into “attempted rape”. You indicate that you have written to the President of the National Assembly to inform him of your position.

“I have never wanted to hide behind my parliamentary immunity, nor benefit from any privileges by virtue of my status as a deputy”, he wrote. As a parliamentarian, Damien Abad in fact enjoys parliamentary immunity, which protects him from arrests, pre-trial detention and judicial checks. However, this immunity does not prevent possible prosecution.

File three complaints

Affiliated with the Renaissance group in the National Assembly, Damien Abad was appointed in May 2022 Minister of Solidarity, Autonomy and Persons with Disabilities. But the day after appointing him, Mediapart reported in an investigation the testimonies of two women who accused him of rape. One of them filed a complaint in 2012, then in 2017, complaints that were rejected. Several testimonies from victims had followed the publication of the investigation by the investigative newspaper.

But at the end of June 2022 a woman had filed a complaint for “attempted rape”, leading to an investigation. Despite these multiple allegations, he was re-elected as a deputy, then resigned from the government on July 4. The same day, a fourth woman accused him of chemical submission rape, which allegedly occurred in 2013.

“I will defend myself relentlessly to prove my innocence and clear my honor”, concluded Abad in his press release. The National Assembly office is expected to rule on his case around May 24.
