Created in 1939, the Cannes Film Festival brings together every year, during the second half of May, filmmakers, stars, journalists and industry professionals around a preview selection of the best films selected from around the world. He is chaired since 2022 by Iris Knobloch while Thierry Frémaux has been its general delegate since 2007. The screenings take place at the Palais des Festivals. Every day, the teams from the films in competition climb the famous steps of the red carpet. Where and when ?
This year, the Cannes Film Festival will take place from 16 to 27 May 2023 on the Croisette. The opening ceremony will be presented by Chiara Mastroianni and broadcast live on France 2 (several programmes, such as It’s up to you, will also be transferred to Cannes during the Festival) and Brut from 6.50pm. We also know that Michael Douglas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or. After this opening ceremony, the historical drama will be screened Joan of Barry directed by Maïwenn, in which he plays the title role, alongside Johnny Depp in that of Louis XV. The jury and the films in Official Competition
This year, the president of the jury is the Swedish director Ruben Östlundwhich was awarded the Palme d’Or twice: in 2017 for The square and in 2022 for Without filter. He will be accompanied in his choices by the French director Julia DucournauPalme d’Or in 2021 with Titaniumthe american actress Brie LarsonOscar winner for Room in 2016, the Moroccan director Maryam Touzanithe French actor Denis Menochetthe Anglo-Zambian director Rungano Nyonithe actor Paul Danothe Afghan writer Atq Rahimi and the Argentine director Damiano Szifron.
This jury will have the difficult task of choosing the Golden Palm among 21 films, made by veteran filmmakers like Wes Anderson or Nanni Moretti and sometimes already awarded (Wim Wenders, Ken Loach) but also hopeful of following. Note that this year, the official competition includes seven female directors : we are still far from the parity required by the 50/50 collective but it is a record in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.

The Official Awards contain the following prizes: the Palme d’Or, the Best Actress Award, the Best Actor Award, the Jury Award, the Director Award and the Screenplay Award, but also Un Certain Regard (more independent films), the Caméra d’Or (best first work) and the Palme d’Or for the short film. The Festival has other parallel sections, such as the Quinzaine des cinéastes (non-competitive), the Critics’ Week (which has its own awards). All selections combined, the Queer Palm awards a film from 2010 for its treatment of LGBTQ+ themes. This year it is chaired by John Cameron Mitchell.

Finally, director Pedro Almodovar will present his gay western, Strange lifestyleworn by Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascalin the short films section.

France will obviously be well represented with the expected participation of Juliette Binoch, Benoit Magimel, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Guillaume Canet, Vincent Lacoste, Anaïs Demoustier (President of the Camera d’Or jury) or even Virginia Efira, who have films to present on the Croisette. How to participate?
The Cannes Film Festival is above all an event reserved for professionals of the film industry, accredited according to their profession. However, viewers can request accreditation Cannes cinephiles to have access to films from the Official Selection (which includes (Competition, Out of Competition, Special Screenings, Un Certain Regard), Critics’ Week and Filmmakers’ Fortnight which will be screened in Cannes.
