When Deadpool and Wolverine hit theaters, it didn’t just break records, it blew them away. The film became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made, earning universal love from fans and critics alike.
The film brought out something special, bringing Hugh JackmannWolverine returns to the big screen paying homage to Marvel icons of the past such as Elektra (played by Jennifer Garner) and X-23 (Dafne Keen).
But one of the most exciting surprises has arrived Channing Tatumwho finally got to play the role of Gambit, a character he had been trying to play for years!
Despite the massive reaction to his appearance, Tatum’s feelings about the whole experience are surprisingly down-to-earth.
While promoting his new film Roofman on Hot Ones, Tatum talked about his career and his brief time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When host Sean Evans appeared Deadpool and WolverineTatum admitted that he doesn’t feel part of the phenomenon.
“I was there for two seconds,” Tatum said. “So I don’t feel like I’m part of that.”
For most fans, however, his cameo in Gambit was anything but small. It was a long-awaited reward after years of setbacks trying to get his film Gambit off the ground.
The love for his take on the character was so strong that Marvel quickly confirmed Tatum’s return Avengers: Judgment Daywhich is shaping up to be another huge multiverse event that will bring back classic Fox-era X-Men stars.
In the same interview, the actor spoke openly about the current state of Hollywood and how streaming has changed the way films are made.
“I think now, when you’re asked to make a movie, or you’re trying to make a movie, there’s a very confusing set of possibilities, and it really seems like, sometimes, you’re incentivized to do bad things to get paid, rather than do something really, really good, for the fucking people who actually get to see these things and the people who want to see these movies, the person I was when I was a kid, and I want good movies.
“I’m like, ‘Man, I want to give my money to good movies.’ It’s a very topsy-turvy time, but I believe the upheaval will lead to something good. I believe it. I think streamers came for a reason, and they had to change, they had to transform.
It’s clear that Tatum’s passion for quality storytelling runs deep, even as part of one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. His hope that the industry is heading for a creative renaissance seems genuine.
With Avengers: Judgment Day on the horizon, it appears fans still haven’t seen the last of Tatum’s Gambit. And even though he may not “feel a part of” Deadpool and Wolverinefans definitely think differently.
Avengers: Judgment Day will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
