Scarlett Johansson concluded her run as Marvel’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. After nine movies in eleven years, she’s a well-deserved retirement. She’s excited for the next chapters of her acting career, but she almost didn’t play Black Widow for the first time in Iron man 2 all those years gone by.
Emilia Blunt (The devil wears Prada, Mary Poppins Returns) was first cast in the role and Johansson was turned down, but when Blunt had to abruptly drop out due to a contractual obligation with Fox, Johansson was ready to step in. pigeonholed into roles in a recent profile with Variety:
“I was rejected for two roles: the first was ‘Iron Man 2’ and then the other was ‘Gravity’ by Alfonso Cuarón. I had longed for that role. It was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the job right?’ The job that was offered to me seemed deeply unsatisfying. I think I’ve been offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I was like, ‘Is this the end of the road creatively?’”
She went on to talk about her feelings on landing the role:
“That movie wasn’t going to advance the needle in terms of how my character was written, but there was the potential for what it could be — growth potential in later movies.”
Potential, indeed! It’s quite exhausted her Marvel character of hers, and it’s been a great journey for fans to move forward with her. I’m glad Johansson has been a part of the MCU for so long. Now to bring Emily Blunt back!
