Dolph Lundgren he had a tough time working with Sylvester Stallone in the 2010 action film the Expendables. Stallone directed the film and there was a point during production where Lundgren wasn’t happy with how Stallone was treating him. He says he got to the point where he wanted to punch Stallone and leave the production.
Lundgren spoke about this experience in an interview with ‘In Depth With Graham Bensinger’ saying that “We’ve had some good times and some bad times, kind of like a family to some extent.” She then went on to share what Stallone did that set him off:
“He was really hard on me in a scene in ‘The Expendables’ where he yelled at me in front of the whole crew and made me do about 20 takes of a scene. He was like, ‘My grandmother could do it better than this. What the fuck, what are you doing?’ You know, basically in front of everyone. And that day there was also the press, the international press”.
Lundgren went on to talk about the aftermath of this and what was on his mind. One thing he wanted to do was knock out the director. However, Stallone knew he was wrong to do what he did and ended up apologizing for his actions. Lundgren said:
“We took a break for lunch and I remember I was a bit in tears. I was really shocked. I called my wife that time and basically said to her, “If he says one more word, I’ll knock him out and fuck this movie, I’m out.” I’m gonna punch him and fuck off.’ And I think when I walked on set, people felt it wasn’t such a good vibe. And then I patted on the back and it was Sly. And he was like, ‘Uh, I’m sorry about that. Let’s just do one more take and keep going.’ And we’ve had a few fights over the years, but what can I say, he’s a crazy Italian. I think he knows I’ve always respected and loved him, and I think that’s why we’re still friends.
Lundgren and Stallone have continued to work together over the years and recently appeared together in Creed II. When it was announced last year that MGM was developing a new Rocky spin-off film centered on the Drago family, Stallone has spoken out against the project, saying:
“By the way, I have nothing but respect for Dolph, but I wish he’d told me what was going on behind my back. Keep your REAL friends close.”
Lundgren then responded by saying, “Just to set the record straight regarding a possible Dragon spin off. There is no approved script, no deal in place, no director and personally I was under the impression that my friend Sly Stallone was involved as a producer or even an actor. There was a leak last week that was unfortunate. In touch with Mr. Balboa – just so all the fans can relax… There you go.”
After everything they’ve been through, the two remain friends and recently worked together The mercenaries 4which will arrive by the end of the year.
