The Academy of Medicine certifies: it is necessary to use sunscreen before applying the semi-permanent

Opting for semi-permanent is a long-lasting alternative to classic nail polish. The problem is, we don’t apply sunscreen before every nail bar appointment… when we should.

If you’re used to applying semi-permanent, then you know that this ritual requires use a UV lamp in order to create a polymerization of the product applied on the nails. But here are these small lamps with blue or white light they emit UVA type UV rays which can trigger, in the long term, the development of skin tumors by penetrating into the heart of the dermis. A phenomenon that tends to worry the Academy of Medicine, which has urged enthusiasts of this technique to be cautious. He explains in a press release:

“Demi-permanent varnish application requires the use of a lamp that combines UV (at least 48 watts) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) to cure and set each of the four layers of varnish applied. However, these lamps emit type A UV rays (UVA), which penetrate deeply into the skin and are known to promote aging but especially the development of skin cancer.

Studies are still needed

Already in 2022 a study by the American Academy of Dermatology confirmed that a “regular use [de cette technique] could increase the risk of skin cancer and cause premature aging.

The dermatologist Lauren G. Franco, had endorsed this theory in the columns of the American magazine Byrdie.

“Tanning beds and gel manicures contain high levels of UVA radiation, which plays a significant role in the development of skin cancer.

Fortunately, unlike regular tanning beds, these lamps emit less UVA radiation, which reduces your risk. But that doesn’t stop me from advising my patients to play it safe and protect their skin, if only to prevent wrinkles and blemishes. »

However, the Academy of Medicine recognizes the need for larger studies to evaluate the risks in detail.

How to defend yourself against risks?

Applying sunscreen 20 minutes before your appointment. Both on the hands and feet (if you opt for a pedicure), both areas can be in prolonged contact with UVA rays which can lead to premature aging mechanism and, in the long run, to skin cancer.

But the Academy of Medicine also recommends that broad information campaigns are disseminated to the general public and the professionals concerned in order to highlight “the risk associated with the continuous application of semi-permanent nail polishes throughout the year, especially in people with a light phototype”.

And that’s not all! According to the same source, manufacturers of UV lamps should also be required to attach a warning message and recommendations regarding the use of their instrument.

Will this caveat make things happen in a universe that is ultimately very badly adjusted? Mystery…
