Barbie presents a doll with Down syndrome

A lot has changed, Barbie. If we find, again and again, dolls with measures far from the reality of the real humans they are supposed to representsome models in their collection want to be more inclusive and want to promote a diversity often wiped off the radar.

Barbie had already started making good progress on the topic of highlighting diversity, especially with her collection Fashionistaswhere you might find Barbie mounted, in a wheelchair, with a prosthetic leg or even a Ken with Vitiligo.

This time it is Trisomy 21 that is being proposed, and it is a great initiative, as stated by Éléonore Laloux, municipal councilor responsible for inclusive transition and happiness in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), author of the book Triso and then!French ambassador of this new Barbie:

It’s a great first time for me to be the ambassador for Barbie and their first Down Syndrome doll. It’s great that this Barbie has found her place in the line, just like I have found my place in society. I want to share my experience and show the world that you can live happily with Trisomy 21. The most important thing is that parents see this doll and keep hope alive

• Physically : a new face and a new body more representative of women with Trisomy 21, with a smaller waist and a more elongated bust. Her face has a more rounded shape, smaller ears, and a flat nose bridge. Her almond-shaped eyes are also slightly slanted and the doll’s palms are single-lined, a characteristic often associated with people with Down syndrome.
• His clothes : she wears a yellow and blue dress with puffed sleeves decorated with butterflies, colors and symbols associated with Down syndrome awareness. The doll’s pink charm represents all three copies of chromosome 21.
• Its accessories : Barbie doll has pink shin guards to match her outfit (some kids use braces to support their feet and ankles) and zip-up sneakers.
