Ilene Chaiken and cast by The L Word: Generation Q appeared on Tuesday’s daily White House briefing to comment on attacks on the LGBTQI community.
They were in the White House to celebrate Lesbian Visibility Week.
“We are satisfied with that The L word live on and speak to a new generation,” Chaiken told reporters. “But we are painfully aware that our fight is far from over. We face new threats to our community, from online harassment to acts of legal violence to actual physical violence. Astounding, backward, vile attacks by groups and individuals who only diminish their own humanity by trying to deny our humanity.”
Chaiken is the co-creator, writer and executive producer of The L word. She and the cast were the latest showbiz characters to take the boardroom platform, followed by others including the cast of Teddy LassoCyndi Lauper and Matthew McConaughey.
Also appeared at the briefing Generation Q With Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig.
Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly LGBTQI person to serve as White House press secretary, said she participated in the making of a film L word Episode featuring characters Bette and Tina’s marriage, “a moment that meant so much to queer women across the country.”
“Even though I grew up in one of the most diverse cities in the world [New York City], as a young, queer woman of color, I sometimes felt alone and invisible,” Jean-Pierre said. “For so many people in our community, the impact of The L Word cannot be underestimated. It is incredibly important to see different stories that reflect our lives. It’s important that young people see characters on TV and in books they can relate to, whose life stories and identities inspire them to reach their highest, highest potential.”
The L Word: Generation Qa sequel to the original that was recently pulled from Showtime, but a new series is in the works.
