The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) has announced details of its upcoming 57th edition, which runs from June 30 to July 8.
Among the highlights announced today, the festival will present two large-scale retrospective programs. The first, a celebration of independent Iranian cinema, will feature works by nine Iranian filmmakers who, according to the festival, “represent a spiritual connection with their country’s greats of previous generations and deal with contemporary realities with remarkable sensitivity and ingenuity.”
“Together, these nine unique and deeply personal testimonies form a multi-dimensional mosaic that reflects the collective spirit and openness of young Iranian cinema today,” the festival added.
The selection of films includes The skin (Bahram Ark, Bahman Ark, 2020), K9 (Vahid Vakilifar, 2020), ed dream goal (Negin Ahmad, 2023).
The second retrospective celebrates the work of Japanese filmmaker Yasuzo Masumura, a little-seen but extremely important figure in the Japanese New Wave. The program features the festival premiere of Masumura’s 4K restoration The Red Angel (1966).
On the industry side, Karlovy Vary planned to expand its Future Frames program for emerging European filmmakers. Traditionally, ten film students and graduates are selected as part of the program to show their short and medium-length films to the festival audience. The filmmakers also participate in tailor-made mentoring programs. This year the program is run in partnership with UTA, Range Media Partners and global lottery operator Allwyn.
Attendees meet in person with representatives from UTA and Range Media, who provide feedback on the projects and select a director, who will receive an Allwyn-sponsored scholarship to spend a month in Los Angeles. A new creative and networking space entitled Allwyn Future Frames Lounge will be built in the festival center of the Thermal Hotel. The Future Frames program runs from 2 to 5 July.
Elsewhere, KVIFF will congratulate Czech actress Daniela Kolářová on the President’s Award, along with a screening of her 1976 comedy ball lightning. The festival also shared the official artwork for this year’s edition. Check it out below.
