Platino Award Winners: “Argentina, 1985” and “News of a Kidnapping” Take Top Honors

Political thriller by Santiago Mitres Argentina, 1985and the Colombian series News of a kidnappingcreated by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, took home the big prizes at the tenth Platino Awards on Saturday night.

Miter’s film won six gongs, including Best Ibero-American Film, Best Screenplay for co-writers Miter and Mariano Llinas, Best Actor for Ricardo Darín, and the Audience Award.

The film tells the story of Argentine lawyers Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, who bravely prosecuted members of the country’s former bloody military dictatorship. An estimated 30,000 people disappeared between 1976 and 1983 under the regime. The picture debuted in competition in Venice, where it won the Fipresci prize, and was Argentina’s entry into the international Oscar race.

News of a kidnapping (Noticia de un kidnapping) dominated the TV section, taking home four awards, including Best Miniseries or Series, Best Creator of a Series, and Best Actress in a Series or Miniseries for Cristina Umaña.

The two Amazon original projects also led the nominations for this year’s awards, which was the tenth edition of the awards show.

Elsewhere, the protagonists are Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas Official competition received the award for the best Ibero-American comedy and the actor Benicio del Toro received this year’s award Platino. During his acceptance speech, Del Toro spoke at length about his experiences as a Latino actor in Hollywood and how he managed to challenge stereotypes and avoid being typecast.

“In Hollywood, most stories are not meant for minorities. I have Latino friends who have asked me if I don’t mind being typecast as Latino because there usually aren’t good roles for Latinos,” he said.

“But after studying acting, I had the opportunity to work with directors, writers and producers who listened to my cry to give the character dimension, oh, somehow I won them over.”
