EXCLUSIVE: The Coronation of King Charles III. is less than a month away and documents about the new monarch’s life are still developing.
Above is an exclusive excerpt from Charles: In his own wordsthe archive special from Disney+ and Hulu Diana: In her own words Creator Tom Jennings. He told Deadline that the film shows how the king is “much more complex than you think”.
“He’s playing a very, very long game and he’s playing it very well,” Jennings added. “He plays 3D chess while most of us play checkers.”
The doc will premiere on Nat Geo on Friday, April 28, and stream a day later on Hulu and May 5 on Disney+. The format uses moments from the king’s past to explain his actions in modern times, such as his outspoken support for environmental causes. British royals are generally reluctant to comment on major debates, but many believe Charles will seek to challenge that tradition.
The clip above recalls how 19-year-old Charles was the subject of a series of protests before his inauguration as Prince of Wales in 1969, when Welsh nationalists objected to his English ancestry. At the time, he was studying language and culture at a local university, and his time there led him to eventually become involved in environmental projects.
“As an American, I knew Charles from the headlines and the Diana story, but I didn’t know much about his inauguration in 1969,” Jennings said. “There was actually a lot of protest that he was going to be Prince of Wales, but when he was 19 he went out and beat these people head-on and charmed them. What did I do when I was 19? Certainly not to tame angry mobs.”
A second clip shows Charles meeting a local Welsh farmer after his inauguration, on a tour that greatly influenced his thinking for the future.
“Before I made this documentary, I didn’t know that he spent eight weeks at the University of Wales learning the language and history and how he spoke so passionately about Wales,” Jennings said. “I didn’t know he was on a grand tour of Wales and how his environmentalism was effectively born on that trip.”
