New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed a proclamation on Friday proclaiming April 14, 2023 The wonderful Mrs. Maisel Day, honoring the Prime Video series for its positive impact on NYC and the iconic path it has blazed around the world. The first three episodes of the fifth and final season are released today.
The series “captures the beautiful streets of New York City, has a strong female lead, and is the perfect example of how our city’s film and television industry creates jobs and generates economic activity,” Adams said, citing more than 185,000 jobs and more than $82 billion in total economic output. “We continue to work with studios and stakeholders like Prime Video to ensure they have New York City available for their production needs.”
For seven years, the show employed more than 37,000 actors and artisans, including 344 dancers, 580 musicians, 981 day artists and 35,619 background artists. Based at Steiner Studios, it uses the city as a backdrop, filming in more than 350 locations across the five boroughs (primarily Manhattan and Brooklyn) and promoting the local economy and business.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: Maisel”is not only one of my favorite shows, but also an important part of the vibrant economic growth supported by New York’s thriving television and film industries.”
The proclamation came as the New York State Legislature finalized a budget in Albany that included measures to reduce the film and television production tax credit to 30% (from 25%), raise the annual cap to $700 million, and Change in terms of payout envisages a new stimulus package that will extend to 2034. It aims to attract filming to the state as competition from Atlanta to neighboring New Jersey continues to increase. The April 1st deadline to meet the budget was extended twice to April 17th.
“It was so great to see the streets and landmarks of NYC featured so prominently in this award-winning series,” added Anne del Castillo, the mayor’s media and entertainment commissioner. “This is a great example of how film and television enable people from all over the world to experience the magic of NYC, the creative capital of the world.”
The wonderful Mrs. Maisel, from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, is produced, written and directed by Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. It stars Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, Reid Scott, Alfie Fuller and Jason Ralph. It won 20 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series; six Critics Choice Awards; four SAG Awards; and three Golden Globes.
