The Cannes Film Festival announced the lineup for its 76th edition on Thursday morning, and the official selection included a record number of films directed by female filmmakers that will compete.
The festival presents six films by women in competition. The selected films and filmmakers are La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher), club zero (Jessica Hausner) Last summer (Catherine Breillat), Anatomy of a parachute (Justine Triet) Banel and Adama (Ramata-Toulaye Sy) and Daughters of Olfa (Kouther Ben Hania).
The previous record of five films by women filmmakers in competition was set last year, with a series by Kelly Reichardt starring Michelle Williams. to show yourselfby Claire Denis stars at noonand Charlotte Vandermeersch co-director Le Otto Montagne.
So far, the festival has announced 19 films that will participate in the competition, keeping the total number of female filmmakers under 50%. The wider official list, unveiled this morning, includes 14 female filmmakers from a total of 51 films. Expect a few more signings from vice general Thierry Frémaux in the coming weeks, but this overall pick is currently up from last year’s nine.
This year’s Cannes Film Festival takes place from 16 to 27 May. The opening film will be by Maïwenn Joan of Barry, starring Johnny Depp as King Louis XV, plays out of competition. Other big titles heading to the Croisette include Steve McQueen’s WW2 documentary occupied citywhich will debut in the Special Screenings section, while Takeshi Kitano performs in Cannes cube. HBO’s the idol by Sam Levinson will also play in the Out of Competition category.
