Elon Musk confirmed what he had assumed since he reached an agreement to save Twitter: it will allow Donald Trump to return to the platform.

“I think it was a morally wrong decision to be clear and extremely stupid,” Musk said at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car conference on Tuesday.

Musk warned that the proposed acquisition of Twitter, in which he would take over the privately owned company, was not yet a “complete deal” and that “at best” the transaction would be completed in two to three months.

But he said he spoke to former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and they agreed that the permanent Twitter suspension should be protected from bots or spam accounts.

“Donald Trump’s ban wasn’t fair,” Musk said. “I think it was a mistake. This has alienated a large part of the country “.

Instead of Trump voiceless, he said, a permanent suspension would only amplify his voice on the right.

Trump said he will not return to Twitter but will maintain a presence on his social media platform, Truth Social. But there is great doubt that he will remain so, given the much wider social platform, and above all if he decides to run again in the presidential elections of 2024.

Trump was forever banned from Twitter following the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill. The company said this was caused by the “risk of further incitement to violence” as it cited numerous instances where Trump violated their terms of service.

Last month, Twitter’s board of directors accepted Musk’s offer to buy the company for about $ 44 billion. Musk criticized the company’s content moderation decisions, which were too restrictive, leading to the immediate assumption that he was restoring Trump’s account and the account of other figures on the sidelines.

At the Financial Times event, Musk showed the possibility of temporarily suspending accounts or restricting access to them if it is discovered that they are promoting illegal activity or doing something destructive to the world. But he said the permanent bans could “primarily undermine trust in Twitter as an account where everyone can express their opinion.”
