What did every girl dream of as a child? Be a princess of course and wear fluffy ball gowns. Heroes of your favorite cartoons appear on the screen and literally break the hearts of young viewers (and ruin their parents’ wallets). Even the author of this material has a real Cinderella dress, which he bought after long and persistent pleading deep in his wardrobe.
Of course now the values have changed a bit and the girls are no longer trying to find a prince on a white horse. But for those just over 25, old Disney cartoons about princesses are a turning point in life.
Therefore, we decided to recall the iconic dresses of our favorite heroes, or rather, the dates of their creation. Moreover, the reason for this is quite affordable. Today, April 5, is the birthday of Lily James, who played Cinderella in the 2015 movie of the same name.
Snow White

Snow White is the first princess in the Disney universe and the cartoon has become a real breakthrough in the industry. To create the picture, the studio used innovative technologies and made the drawn characters as similar as possible to real people: if before that each movement of the hero consisted of ten intermediate frames, then in Snow White this number was doubled, thanks to which the picture became smoother. But it’s not about that now. Snow White’s dress is considered one of the most recognizable images in the history of cinema, which we still pay homage to. So how did the unique original come about?
Since the action of the cartoon takes place in the Middle Ages, the artists were inspired by portraits of royalty from the 15th century. Hence the square neckline, puff sleeves and raised neckline on the bodice (which was in trend at the time). But not all the details of the Snow White image take us back several centuries. For example, the yellow skirt was deliberately simplified, and the hairstyle was completely done in the style of the 1930s.
Cinderella

Cinderella is another Disney princess whose image has gone down in history forever. Everyone in the cartoon seems to remember the moment when the house dress Cinderella wore turned into a luxurious sky-blue ball gown. There is no definitive historical reference for this dress. The resulting image is a kind of mix, referring to different eras. For example, black velvet chokers and flowy overskirts were especially popular in the 60s of the 19th century, Cinderella’s hairstyle almost exactly reflects the trends of the 1880s, but Cinderella’s crystal shoes are reminiscent of the model popular in the 1940s. . The dress itself was based on Christian Dior’s New Look, which was trending at the time the picture was released.
polar lights

The cartoon about Princess Aurora was released in the late 1950s, so it’s no surprise that we also recognize Christian Dior’s sensational New Look here. That’s right, in a medieval reading. For example, the low shoulder line was popular in the 16th century, and the “sharp” style of the dress was inspired by Gothic architecture.
ariel

Disney’s interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” was presented to the world in 1989. And we do not refer to this fact by accident. The truth is that Ariel’s wedding dress is inspired by Princess Diana’s wedding image. If you compare the two images, you can easily find similar details. For example, a crinoline, an impressive veil and, of course, puffy sleeves.
beauty

The action of the cartoon “Beauty and the Beast” takes place in the 17th century, when the dominant trend in culture was baroque. From here, Belle’s dress features lots of curtains, a puffy crinoline, a tight bodice, and bare shoulders. In other words, Güzel’s image reflects the richness of the period almost exactly. But the hairstyle – a high ponytail with a careless beginning – is more reminiscent of the trends of the 1990s.
Princess Tiana

The “Princess and the Frog” cartoon is relatively new to the Disney universe, so its script is slightly different from what we’re used to seeing on screen. No one is trying to save Tiana from the dragon or wake her up with a kiss, and the action takes place in 1920s New Orleans. Therefore, the style of our princess turned out to be appropriate. For example, Tiana’s wedding dress is a modern interpretation of the Charleston dress (which was wildly popular at the time).
