The WKV is calling for a vote on strike authorization next week

The Writers Guild officially called a vote on whether to allow the strike.

“The studios must respond to the crisis of the writers. WGA members must demonstrate our willingness to fight for the contract writers they need and deserve by supporting a vote to agree to the strike,” the union wrote Monday.

Voting begins Tuesday, April 11th at 8:30 PM PT and ends Monday, April 17th at 12:00 PM PT.

The union said in an email to members that after two weeks of negotiations, the AMPTP had “failed to provide meaningful answers to important economic issues in one of the WGA’s core areas of work – screen, episodic television and comedy”.

It acknowledged that “they have politely listened to our presentations and taken small steps in just a few areas,” but that those steps “come with rollbacks to offset any gains.”

The vote to authorize the strike was expected after both sides concluded two weeks of negotiations. The willingness to talk over the next two weeks was there, as we announced on Friday, although a two-week break had previously been planned.

“Now we have to show that determination. You can help by voting yes to authorize the strike, empowering your leadership to reach the best possible settlement before the deadline, or calling a strike after May 1 if companies are unwilling to meet our reasonable demands does not comply. Throughout April, WGA negotiators will continue to work toward the goal of a fair contract for writers,” she added.

Luvh Rakhe, Executive Producer at David And Motherwho sits on the negotiating committee explained to the members what such a step means.

“Requesting an SAV is a step that unions often take to show their determination and support for the negotiating agenda during negotiations. The existence of a SAV does not mean that we are automatically on strike,” Rakhe said in a video. “Instead, it will authorize our West Council and East Council to call a strike after the current MBA contract expires on May 1, if necessary, to get a fair deal for writers.”

Rakhe said the guild will host a series of “member meetings” in person and virtually before the vote, “to let you know where things are and to let you know why we think this vote is the way it is.” important.”
