Josh Brolin2010 adaptation of Jonah Hex it should have been much better than it ended up being. I remember being excited about the movie before it came out because I’m a fan of the western genre and Jonah Hex. Unfortunately, the movie turned out to be a huge disappointment for fans.

Brolin himself wasn’t a fan of the film, and it’s a project he greatly regrets. He brought many talented people into that project, but ultimately the biggest mistake he made was the director they hired to direct the film. Jimmy Hayward.

During a recent interview with Variety, Brolin looked back on the film and how it was a big mistake, and how he has yet to be a part of it to everyone he brought.

“It wasn’t creatively or financially successful. I mean, everyone knows how I feel about Jonah Hex. But the most important thing with Jonah Hex is rushing to hire someone. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I’m still close with, who was Warner Brothers was in the running at the time and he was like, ‘Look, you have to find a director in the next couple of weeks or else we have to sort this out. And then you meet someone who has a lot of knowledge, [director] Jimmy Hayward, and I remember it just didn’t feel right. I loved that he was excited, but he just didn’t have the experience and didn’t treat her the way I imagine some would like to treat her: rush back to their house at the end of each day and look at tonal inspirations and [Martin] Scorsese movie or this or that. Instead he would have gone out and celebrated.”

Jonah Hex it was Hayward’s first film and unfortunately, it seems he didn’t take the opportunity seriously and squandered it. Brolin when he says:

“And not that I had a lot of attraction then, but I brought Megan [Fox,] which I thought was perfect for that role. Maybe she’s not the best actress at the time, but for that kind of parody, she lets it go. You, at that moment? You couldn’t do better. AND [Michael] Fasbender? One of our best actors, who had done Shame and Hunger, are you kidding me? Malkovich, who had just been robbed by Bernie Madoff, and we ask him to do it for a third of the price of him. He said yes. I mean, fuck, I still owe these people. Michael Shannon was inside, he was cut off. We just asked Michael to do George and Tammy because I retired, and he took over for me and he was amazing. So the intention was there, I just think we made a big mistake with the director: don’t blame him, because that was my choice, that was my bad choice.”

It’s a shame things turned out the way they did Jonah Hex. It deserved to be so much better! Brolin continued to talk about his Old boy remake and how that was another disappointment which he believes is due to studio interference:

“And then the studio kicked in and every time it happened, in my experience, it just got worse. They did it with Old Boy with Spike Lee. I thought Spike’s cut was actually a lot better than the studio’s, but the studio took and I thought they were going to cut it really badly and I thought it ended up having the opposite effect This is what happens when you start cutting this idea of pandering to an audience, and how tests can bite you in the ass. I don’t know what the audience is going to want. Jonah Hex was them taking over the movie and saying, how can we make the movie more accessible? And they ended up making the movie less accessible.

Eventually it was played again with the character of Jonah Hex DC’s Legends of Tomorrowbut there is one badass character who could carry his own movie or series if done right.
