Jodie Comer and Paul Mescal were among the big winners at the 2023 Olivier Awards, which were launched tonight at London’s Royal Albert Hall. To scroll down for the full list of winners.
Comer won Best Actress for her West End debut in the critically acclaimed legal thriller Big face, which had a total of five nominations, including Best New Play and Best Director. The play was written by Australian-British author Suzie Miller. That night the play won two awards, Comer’s win and Best New Play.
Mescal won Best Actor for his reincarnation of Stanley Kowalski in Rebecca Frecknall’s stunning adaptation of the Tennessee Williams theater classic End station required. The play, which won a total of three awards tonight, premiered at the Almeida Theater in north London but has since moved to the West End.
Mescal accepted the award and paid tribute to Frecknall by calling the British director his “favourite director”.
“You guided us from the beginning and pushed us to make this piece our own,” Mescal said, “but it’s all yours. It comes from your extreme talent.”
Mescal and Comer are both first-time winners of the Olivier Award. Elsewhere mescals tram Co-star Anjana Vasan won Best Supporting Actress, while the play also received the gong for Best Revival.
The award for best director went to Phelim McDermott for his work My neighbor Totoro, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s stage adaptation of the cult 1988 Studio Ghibli animated film. Totoro was the most nominated production this year with nine nominations including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, Best Director, Best Theater Choreographer, Best Original Score and a Best Actress nomination for Mei Mac. The play won six prizes tonight.
Standing on the edge of heavena National Theater production followed totoro with eight nominations, the most for a musical. Set in Sheffield, England, the production opened in 2019 and won two awards.
The course of the evening was carried out Teddy Lasso Star Hannah Waddingham, who opened the show at the Royal Albert Hall with a musical number. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Sir Derek Jacobi.
