The White House is not paying for employees’ blue ticks under Twitter’s new verification plan

The White House won’t pay for employees to have Twitter’s blue verification badges as platform owner Elon Musk implements a plan to remove them unless users pay for the service.

Axios reported Friday that White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty wrote to employees: “We believe that Twitter Blue does not offer person-level verification as a service. For example, a blue check mark now simply serves as confirmation that the account is a paid user.”

To keep a blue check, users have to pay $8 per month or $84 per year. Musk announced that the platform will begin removing blue ticks from April 1. Twitter also grays out accounts of government organizations and certain government officials, but not all employees.

The blue ticks were previously given free of charge to public figures, journalists and other personalities. It is designed to quickly identify trusted accounts and prevent the spread of fraudulent accounts.

Other organizations have also spoken out against the pay-for-tick plan. Some news outlets have announced that they will not pay for the ticks, while LeBron James is one of the celebrities who has promised not to.

He wrote on Friday: “Cub rate my blue [checkmark] will be gone soon because if you know me I won’t pay the 5.
