John Fetterman first spoke publicly about his inpatient treatment for depression in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Jane Pauley.
Fetterman was released today after spending six weeks at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center dealing with clinical depression, according to his representative Joe Calvello.
“I couldn’t get out of bed,” the freshman senator from Pennsylvania told Pauley of his downward spiral in a clip posted online. “I stopped eating and lost weight. I stopped engaging in some of the things I loved most in life.
Fetterman says he is aware of the paradox given his political success.
“It’s like you’ve just won the biggest race in the country and the whole thing about depression is that you could objectively win, but depression can absolutely convince you that you’ve really lost. And that is exactly what happened. And that was the beginning of a downward spiral.”

Calvello said in a statement that Fetterman is back home in Pennsylvania and will return to work when the Senate reconvenes in April.
“I’m so happy to be home,” Fetterman said Friday, according to NBC News. “I look forward to being the father and husband that I want to be and the Senator Pennsylvania deserves.”
The senator also thanked Walter Reed’s staff and offered advice for others who may be suffering.
“I am very grateful for the incredible team at Walter Reed. The care they provided changed my life,” says Fetterman. “I will say more about that soon, but for now I want everyone to know that depression is treatable and that the treatment works. This is not about politics – right now there are people in the red and blue circles who are suffering from depression. If you need help, get help.”
