The Los Angeles School District’s three-day strike begins March 21

About 30,000 cafeteria workers, bus drivers, janitors, special education teachers and other members of the Service Employees International Union Local 99 have chosen March 21 as the date to begin a three-day strike.

The strike would have closed schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, with the target date announced tonight at a rally in Grand Park.

SEIU declared a strike after negotiations with the school district and previously announced it would terminate its existing contract. The union has about 30,000 workers and the 30,000-man United Teachers Los Angeles said they would respect the SEIU picket lines in the event of a strike.

Further negotiations are scheduled for Friday. LAUSD claims it offered a 5% wage
Increase retroactive to July 2021, another 5% increase retroactive to July 2022,
and a further 5% increase from July 2023, along with a 4% bonus in 2022-23
and a 5% bonus in 2023-24.

SEIU is asking for a 30% across-the-board pay raise. There is also widespread underemployment throughout the district.
