A book that addresses fraternity and sexism
But what is the novel about? As often happens in fantasy, we find ourselves in what appears to be a medieval monarchy on an imaginary territory. If you choose to get the full-size hardcover edition, you’ll find that the cover of the book turns out to be a map of where the plot takes place.
In the center you see Ithicana, known as the Kingdom of the Bridges, which is also the focus of the story. Ithicana controls all commerce in the region and enjoys building or destroying kingdoms.
The heroine, Lara, is from Maridrina south of Ithicana. It is a kingdom that is in agony due to the almost non-existent trade and the very heavy taxes implemented by the king of Ithicana. For generations the kings of Maridrina have tried to overthrow the Kingdom of the Bridges. But the current king has come up with a top secret and rather dubious scheme, which is at the origin of the plot and Lara.
He conceived twelve daughters with twelve different wives. From infancy, little girls were taken from the harem where their mothers lived and taken not far from an oasis in the middle of the Red Desert to a training center for fifteen years.
The goal: at the end of these 15 years, the most gifted of them will be sent to marry the king of Ithicana and will have a year to dismantle the Ponti kingdom from within. Thanks to a ruse, it is Lara who is chosen as the future queen of the enemy kingdom.
Two opposing views of women
This book first addresses sisterhood, as well as sexism, as, in Maridrina’s realm, women are considered docile and weak. Also, Lara’s father only sees it as a means to an end. Conversely, in the kingdom of Ithicana, women may be warriors and even lead armies.
Our heroine has received warrior training and is often said to have the ability to kill entire groups of men. Lara’s courage, tenacity and self-confidence arouse admiration. He rarely doubts!
What will happen to Lara, will she be able to achieve her goal? Is the king of Ithicana as cruel as he seems? Run to the bookstore to find out!
