Hugh Grant has been slammed by publications around the world for his “painfully awkward” red carpet interview with model Ashley Graham at the Oscars last night.
Many slammed the 62-year-old actor for not being enthusiastic when answering the 34-year-old’s questions on the red carpet at the Los Angeles event.
Grant was criticized by media at home and abroad for gagging the delighted reporter and even rolling his eyes during the “smearing” interview.
However, many rushed to defend the actor, claiming it was just Grant’s trademark British humour, while others deflected sharp criticism of Graham for her “boring” questions.
ABC host Graham began her interview by asking, “What do you like best about going to the Oscars?”

The actor replied that the evening was “fascinating”, adding: “All mankind is here. It’s vanity fair.”
His interviewer replied, “Oh, it’s all about Vanity Fair,” presumably assuming Grant was referring to the Vanity Fair Oscar party that was supposed to start right after the awards show.
But it is more likely that Grant was referring to William Thackeray’s 1848 novel, famous for its descriptions of the gatherings and gossip of the English elite.
When pressed by Graham about who he was most excited to see at the awards show, Grant said, “Um, no one in particular.”

The model quickly continued the conversation and asked, “What are you wearing?” Grant offered an explanatory “My suit”.

But she got a slightly awkward response: “Well, I’m barely in, I was in three seconds,” Grant replied.
“That should have been fun, didn’t you?” Graham said as she flicked through the hat.
“Um… almost,” replied the actor, looking away.
In the aftermath, Norwegian publication TV2 wrote “What a piece of s**t” under a photo of the Notting Hill actor, referring to the social media backlash he endured.
Meanwhile, FranceDaily headlines: “Hugh Grant rolls eyes after painfully awkward Oscars red carpet interview.”
In a cheeky version of the interview with The Four Weddings and a Funeral star, the article began by saying: “Why stop at a red carpet interview when you’re going to be an asshole on live TV?”
“That’s the question we have for Hugh Grant, who literally rolled his eyes after refusing all of Ashley Graham’s questions during the Oscars pre-show, which aired Sunday on ABC.”
But in response to the backlash Grant faced, many users flocked to social media to defend the actor. One of them said: “Her questions were boring and she didn’t understand his vain honest comment, sorry Ashley but that’s on you.”
FranceDaily did not deter Grant from his “painfully awkward” interview, accusing him of being an “a-hole on live TV”.
Italian newspaper Il Messaggero also commented on the backlash, accusing the “bored” Grant of adopting a “rude attitude” during the interview.

Meanwhile, another added: “Not alone [was Graham] boring, she missed his reference to Vanity Fair because she thought he was talking about the after party, and she clearly hadn’t seen the movie he was in, because if she had, she wouldn’t have asked any questions.”
A third said simply: “The ‘problem’ was with Ashley – not Hugh. And a fourth added: “Everyone is criticizing him but I don’t think what he said applied to Ashley Graham personally. I think it’s just him and his sarcasm.”
But the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero sided with Graham, accusing Grant of “behaving rudely during the interview and answering in a bored, apparently disinterested manner”.

They added: “Despite the journalist’s efforts to create normal dialogue, the face of ‘Notting Hill’ chose monosyllabic and sometimes derogatory words.”
German news website Bild also condemned the actor for his “completely wrong” behavior, asking: “Aren’t you ashamed, Mr. Grant?”
Meanwhile, Rolling Stone magazine didn’t hold back and declared: “Hugh Grant had a bad night and looked like the undisputed fucking queen of the ceremony. He did a red carpet interview with Ashley Graham during which he rolled his eyes and complained about not getting enough screen time in Glass Onion.”

It took a break from a stunning night in Hollywood where Everything Everywhere All At Once won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, while Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress for her role in the film.
