A 100-year-old grandmother was beheaded by her own grandson, who used an ax to carry out the gruesome murder, police have revealed.

Retired farm worker Amalie G. was found dead in her apartment in downtown Hamburg after her 37-year-old grandson Artur B. was attacked, say investigators.

Police have not yet established a motive for the gruesome murder, but a family member told German newspaper BILD that chemical worker Artur was considered “the black sheep of the family”. Another source said the couple had rowed for money in the past.

“But most of the time he was unemployed and constantly short of funds. Relatives kept their distance from him,” added the relative.

Artur reportedly called the police to say he had decapitated his grandmother, and when police arrived at the bloody scene, they discovered an axe. He is now in custody.

Liddy Oechtering, chief prosecutor, to BILD: “According to the preliminary results of the autopsy, it can be assumed that a cut of the cervix caused by sharp and blunt force was the cause of death. The alleged crime is an ax found at the scene.”

During an autopsy reconstruction, coroners determined that one of the ax blows was made behind the necklace, part of the spinal cord.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, a judge issued an arrest warrant against Artur B. for manslaughter.

Chief prosecutor Oechtering said: “The accused did not give any information to the investigating judge.”

Homicide investigators have not yet identified a motive for the crime.

A neighbor of the murdered centenarian said by photo: “We actually had good contact before her death. Amalie told me that her grandson had already broken into the apartment through the balcony and wanted to steal her money.’

According to information from BILD, he also knew that his grandmother had saved a small fortune.

Neighbors told the newspaper that the arguments between the two were sometimes loud enough to be heard.

The neighbor says: “The grandson often came to his grandmother’s apartment and took care of her. But there was another fight.’

Relatives of Artur B. and Amalie G. said it is possible that a money dispute escalated the situation on the night of the murder.

When asked by BILD, the state prosecutor said Artur B. has no criminal record.

According to information from the Hamburger Abendblatt daily, the man was only known to the police for minor crimes that were not violent.
