Idris Elba’s martini joke in “Luther: The Fallen Sun” is the “pointed middle finger” to James Bond.

The creator of Luther: The fallen sun revealed he couldn’t resist playfully mocking James Bond amid ongoing speculation linking Idris Elba with Ian Fleming’s iconic character.

The Netflix version of the BBC crime series sees Elba’s John Luther rudely refuse a martini, Bond’s famous favorite cocktail.

Neil Cross told the Radio Times that the moment was “a middle finger and a wink” at 007 because Luther is better

That’s what Elba told the magazine Luther: The fallen sun was not a stepping stone to play the British spy as Barbara Broccoli searches for Daniel Craig’s successor.

“My Bond audition? Oh my God no! I’ve been saying no for years,” he said, adding: “The martini line is a bit cheeky isn’t it? I was like, ‘Neil, are you sure you want to put it in there?’

Asked if he agreed with Cross’ argument that Luther was better than Bond, Elba said: “Luther is equally compelling, equally sexy and wonderful to watch. But Bond comes from a universe where espionage was the way to capture. Luther comes from the world where you knock on the door: “Are you in there? I’m coming in.’”
