Hoda Kotb returns to ‘Today’ after being absent due to her daughter’s health issues

Hoda Kotb returned to him Today Monday, as she told viewers that her prolonged absence was due to her three-year-old daughter’s health problem.

“My youngest Hope was in intensive care for a few days, a little over a week in the hospital,” Kotb said at the beginning of the show. “I am so grateful that she is home. She is back at home. I have been waiting for this day and we are keeping a close eye on her. I’m just so happy.”

Kotb was joined by co-host Savannah Guthrie, who was not on the show herself, after learning on Tuesday that she had tested positive for Covid. This forced Guthrie to leave while the show was being taped live.

Kotb’s last live performance was on February 17th. She also appeared on February 20 at the fourth hour Today with Jenna Bush Hager, but it was pre-taped to air on Presidents Day. Last week, following the news of Kotb’s absence from the show, Craig Melvin told viewers she was dealing with a family health issue.

Kotb did not disclose the nature of her daughter’s illness, but told Guthrie, “You know Savannah, what I also realized is when your child is sick, how much gratitude you have for the people who helped you. And so I’m thankful for the Weill Cornell doctors who were amazing and the nurses and I’m thankful for my family and friends like you who were there every day. That’s why I want to tell you this. I love you.”

“I love you too,” Guthrie said. “You have a lot of friends there.”

There is more to come.
