Patricia Arquette has been outspoken on social issues and used her Oscar speech in 2015 to call for equal pay. She shared her thoughts on the upcoming contract negotiations between Hollywood’s guilds and studios on the red carpet for the SAG Awards, where she was nominated to be part of the Apple TV+ cast dismissal
“I think it’s very important that all these unions look to the future,” she told Deadline of the negotiations, where a significant increase in residual flow is expected to be a key demand. “There’s actually very little transparency about how many people are looking at, it’s very difficult to actually get that kind of data; even the unions grope in the dark.”
Arquette cited a history lesson to underscore her point that unions must act decisively in the upcoming talks, despite fears that the industry is still recovering from the blow it suffered from the pandemic.
“I think they screwed up with VHS and video early on and they’ve been trying to catch up ever since,” she said of the guilds. “This industry, like basically all industries, suffered a lot during Covid, many people did not work, although people watched entertainment to calm down. The idea of going on strike is quite scary for people, but there are times when you have to stand up and find out what’s going on, I think everyone recognizes that.”
Arquette added, “That’s what we all have to do, let’s honor and honor these artists and make sure they make a living.”
