EXCLUSIVE: Cleopatra Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Argentinian director-producer Nicolas Onetti’s slasher film What the water left behind: scars.
The picture is the follow-up to Onetti’s 2017 horror hit which left the water behind about a group of young people whose plan to make a documentary about the real, abandoned resort town of Epecuén on the lake takes a cold turn.
The new film returns to Epecuén and follows an Anglo-American indie rock band stranded in the abandoned city. Their inner conflicts and the misfortune of their tour quickly fade as they begin to discover the hell that awaits them.
Camilio Zaffora wrote the scripts for both the original and the sequel.
The drama stars social media influencer David Michigan and Mario Alarcón (The secret in her eyes), Magui Bravi (The 100 Candles Game) and German Baudino (History of the Occult).
The rights deal was brokered by Cleopatra founder and CEO Brian Perera, Tim Yasui VP/GM of Cleopatra Entertainment, with Monica Ciarli, head of international at Minerva Pictures in Rome, who also produced the film with New York’s Black Mandala.
Cleopatra Entertainment plans to release the film in North America in mid-2023
The title has been on a busy festival tour since the fall, with stops at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival (Spain), the Blood Window Film Festival (Argentina), the Boulder International Film Festival (USA) and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Belgium ) ). amongst other things.
The latest movies on the Cleopatra Entertainment list include the most recently released movies Chimes: Tou’s 50th Birthdayr, Glenn Danzig’s horror film Death Rider in the House of Vampires and British drama Mrs. Lowry & son.
