Don Lemon expressed regret for his comments CNN this morning That drew pushback Thursday from GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley and others, as well as pushback from one of Lemon’s own co-hosts.
In the segment, Lemon and co-hosts Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins discussed Haley’s proposal to require candidates over 75 to take competency tests based on their age.
“I’m uncomfortable with all this talk about age,” Lemon said. “I think it’s the wrong way. She says people, politicians or whatever, are not at their best. Nikki Haley is not in her prime, too bad if a woman is considered in her prime she is in her 20’s and 30’s and maybe her 40’s.
“Wait,” Harlow said. “Good for what?”
“It depends. It’s like Prime if you look it up. If you google ‘when is a woman in her prime’ it says ’20s, 30s and 40s’.”
Harlow replied: “40. So I’ve got another decade.”
Lemon added: “I disagree.”
Haley dismissed the comment, writing on Twitter: “Liberals can’t stand the idea of competency tests on senior politicians to make sure they can get the job done. It’s always the liberals who are the most sexist too.”
Of course, the competence test would not only apply to, say, Joe Biden, but also to Haley’s GOP rival Donald Trump. She devoted part of her campaign to the idea that the country should pass leadership to the next generation. Haley then retweeted numerous other criticisms of Lemon’s comments.
In a Twitter post Thursday afternoon, Lemon wrote: “The reference I made this morning to a woman’s ‘best time’ was superficial and irrelevant, as colleagues and family pointed out, and I regret it. A woman’s age does not define her personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who prove that every day.”
