Peter Alexander, NBC News’ chief White House correspondent, said Joe Biden called him on his cell phone to answer questions about China after the president interrupted a post-speech Q&A following a chaotic scene as reporters shouted at each other.
In an interview with Alexander, Biden said, “I think the latter [Chinese President] Xi wants to fundamentally break the relationship with the United States and with me.”
Earlier, Biden commented on his decision to launch a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina after it hovered over the US mainland. He also spoke of sightings of three other unidentified objects shot by Biden.
As he finished, the reporters started asking questions as usual. Alexander tried to invite criticism that shooting the objects was an “overreaction”. But you can hear another reporter shouting about whether his response to China was hampered by his family’s business relationship, and you can also hear other reporters trying to ask their own questions. “Give me a break, man,” Biden said. The President then answered Alexander’s question, telling him, “You can come to my office and ask the question. We will have more polite people.”
Biden then left.
Alexander wrote on Twitter that Biden called him “to answer my questions, which he couldn’t hear because other reporters were shouting.”
