Get your membership cards out. The last Blockbuster store in the US plans to run an ad during the Super Bowl.
No, a bunch of overdue charges didn’t suddenly appear in his bank account. The Bend, Oregon store isn’t buying a $7 million TV spot. Instead, it streams to Instagram. It also plays it on a VHS tape at the store and then makes the tape available for rent for $2 a day.
The store is no doubt counting on the media (like this site) to pick up on the plans and save millions of dollars.
“We’re working on a fun, retro-style ad that we’re releasing during the Big Game. We will be showing it at halftime in the store and on social media,” store owner Sandi Harding said in an email to Oregon Live.
The store teased the spot on Instagram in the run-up to the Big Game. A giant cockroach loomed over the store on a pole amidst a desolate, littered landscape, symbolic of his status as the lone survivor.
“Is the world ending or is Blockbuster releasing its first ad in a very, very long time? Yes. I’ll see you on February 12,” the message said.
