Her name may not tell you anything, but if you Google February 8, 2023, you will probably be captured by the beauty of the illustration that today pays tribute to Cacsmy Brutus, nicknamed Mama Cax.

Why Google pays tribute to disabled model Mama Cax
The most used search engine in the world (even if TikTok is about to replace it…) is used to paying homage to more or less well-known characters in the space above the query bar through what he calls a “doodle”. In celebration of Black History Month (month of celebration of the history of people of African descent, commemorated in February in the United States and Canada, but in October in Ireland and the United Kingdom), Google has decided to pay tribute to people of color by all this month. This time it’s the turn of Mama Cax, a Haitian-American model and activist for the rights of people with disabilities.
She is best known for defying particularly stringent beauty standards in the fashion and beauty industries, proudly walking the catwalk with her artificial leg. On Instagram she regularly shares photos of her daily life, of her street styles, but also of her sports activities such as handcycling, boxing, and even the New York marathon that she did in a wheelchair, without ever pouringinspirational porn often denounced by militant anti-validism. His goal has never been to appear as a “life lesson” in the eyes of able-bodied people without motivation …
Who was the model committed against validism Mama Cax?
Cacsmy Brutus, nicknamed Mama Cax, was born on November 20, 1989 in New York, and spent her childhood in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. At age 14, doctors diagnosed her with bone and lung cancer, which led to hip surgery on her 16th birthday, then the amputation of her right leg. This was replaced by a prosthesis, the color of which obviously did not match her complexion … But Mama Cax learned to appropriate it by personalizing it and adapting it to her style of clothing, as we can see on her Instagram account followed by nearly 180,000 people. So much so that she ends up attracting the attention of the fashion industry.

Indeed, in 2017, the Jag Models agency hired her as a model. The following year, she made the cover of Busy Media Teen Vogue and runway shows as part of New York Fashion Week. Only, she died prematurely in November 2019 of medical complications, at the age of 30.
This February 8, 2023 Google Doodle by illustrator Lyne Lucien pays homage to the life of Mama Cax, a colorful personality who was marked by her Haitian heritage and made her mark on New York City and the fashion industry .
