Spanish-born fashion designer Paco Rabanne, best known for his metallic spacesuits, has died in France. He turned 88.
The self-taught artist conquered the Parisian haute couture scene in the early 1960s with a collection consisting of 12 unwearable, experimental metallic dresses.
His designs quickly became favorites with stars and models of the time, such as France’s Anouk Aimée, Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot and Britain’s Twiggy.
He soon made contact with the world of cinema, designing the iconic costumes for Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim’s 1968 cult film. barbarawhich is still on display at the MoMA in New York.
Other theater credits included Roberto Enrico The Last Adventure and that of Joël Le Moigné Les Ponyettes.
Rabanne also created individual plays for Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 drama Two or three things I know about her… Stanley Donens Two for the road (for Audrey Hepburn, for which he received a wardrobe loan) and that of John Huston Casino Royale.
Rabanne retired in 1999, but his defunct label was revived in 2011 by the Spanish company Puig, which relaunched it as the fashion house and perfume company he now controls.
“The House of Paco Rabanne would like to honor our visionary designer and founder, who passed away today at the age of 88,” the company said in a statement on its website.
“His legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration.”
