According to the director, Jack explained that while he was waiting for rescuers, if Rosa gave him a life jacket, he could theoretically last a few hours, but that such behavior would in no way fit his character.
“Jack may have survived but there are many other situations. I think that’s what went through his head: “I’m not going to do anything to endanger his life.” And that’s 100% consistent with his character,” he said.
