British brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate appealed to the Bucharest Court of Appeal today against the decision to extend their sentence.

The brothers were seen leaving the courthouse around noon.

The judges remained in court to consider the appeal, which would have released Andrew and Tristan Tate and their alleged accomplices if they were ruled to pose no danger to society.

She is currently being investigated for alleged “organized criminal gang formation, human trafficking and rape”.

If the appeal is successful, they will be released immediately. If not, they will remain in custody until at least February 27.

Andrew was heard shouting at reporters this morning, ‘You know I’m innocent’, as he was taken to court by Romanian police.

Who is Andrew Tate?

Andrew Tate rose to prominence as a kickboxer in the 2000s, winning the 2009 British International Sport Karate Association cruiserweight championship and an ISKA world title in 2011.

Around this time, he later started what he described as a “webcam business” with his brother, which he later admitted was a “scam” in which he used women to exploit customers for money.

Tate was removed from the Big Brother house after a week after footage emerged of him punching and hitting an ex-girlfriend, which both later said was consensual.

Tate moved to Romania in 2017 to live in a compound surrounded by armed guards. He was banned from Twitter for comments that attributed “some responsibility” to rape victims.

Prosecutors accused him of transporting women to Romania and physically and emotionally forcing them to produce explicit material to share and sell online.

Meanwhile, old clips of Andrew Tate on TikTok became popular in 2022 when he promoted his online “Hustler’s University” – a paid online community that claims to help users “get rich quick.”

In March 2022, Andrew Tate was accused of raping a woman he moved to Romania. Tate says the allegation was made up after he refused to buy her a house.

The brothers’ Romanian vault was raided in April 2022 after authorities believed two women were being held against their will. The Tates were eventually released, but the investigation was still ongoing.

Tate was reinstated by Elon Musk on Twitter, but soon after sparked a dispute with Greta Thunberg and was arrested soon after.

Romanian police held the brothers in pre-trial detention from 30 December, which was extended from 20 January to 27 February.

The Tate brothers deny the allegations against them.

The brothers and alleged ‘lieutenants’ Georgiana Naghel and Luana Alexandra Radu are detained in Romania.

They received a precautionary arrest warrant on 30 December 2022 and have since been held by the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) in Romania, where both are based.

Prosecutors initially argued that if the brothers were released on bail, they could exercise “psychological control” over the people they were accused of trafficking.

Both protested their innocence.

On February 20, the Bucharest Tribunal extended the preventive detention order from January 29 to February 27 and may be extended further.

The Tate brothers lost their appeal against the first extension last month.

The four detainees have not yet been officially charged with any crime and have maintained their innocence.

Andrew and his brother moved into a converted warehouse in Romania in 2017, which they staffed with armed guards.

In their hideout on the outskirts of Bucharest, the Tate brothers operated a video chat studio where several women were found in a police raid in April 2022.

Prosecutors allege that the brothers lured women to the studio where they were sexually exploited through “acts of physical violence and psychological coercion (through harassment, constant surveillance, control and recourse to alleged guilt)” and forced to produce and display pornographic material. Andrew Tate is also accused of raping a Moldovan who he claims followed him from London in March 2022, which he categorically denies.

In January, he told the Bucharest Court of Appeal that the alleged victim voluntarily moved with him to Romania in November 2021.

Tate claimed she filed a rape report almost six months later when he refused to give her money to buy a house and become a TikTok star.

“My case is not a criminal one, but a political one. It is not about justice or fairness. It’s about attacking my influence on the world,” read a message posted on his Twitter account on Sunday.

Andrew Tate’s views on women, masculinity and entrepreneurship, expressed on podcasts and shared online, became popular in 2022 when they were shared in short clips on social media.

He ended up being banned from various platforms for misogyny and hate speech.

While Tate maintains his innocence, Romanian prosecutors told DIICOT in a statement that they had identified six victims in the human trafficking case.
